Nestled within the Arrábida Natural Park, Quinta do Peru has the rare distinction of having been designed specifically to honour the landscape around it rather than reshape it. Designed by American architect Rocky Roquemore and opened in 1994 as the first golf course in the Azeitão region, it winds across a high undulating plateau where views across the pine canopy to the distant hills are a constant companion throughout the round.
The course earned a ranking of 57th among all courses in continental Europe and has been rated among the top 100 in Golf World magazine. Its par 72 layout features strategically placed bunkers, fast and true-rolling greens, and a handful of memorable holes involving water — most notably the 8th, a short par 3 with a lake guarding the green, and the par 4 12th, where a lake runs the entire length of the fairway. In 2019, new owners Reformosa undertook a significant renovation programme that brought the course back to championship condition.

Widely considered one of Rocky Roquemore’s finest designs, Belas Clube de Campo occupies a dramatic setting in the Carregueira Mountains with panoramic views towards the Serra de Sintra. The course threads through rolling hills and deep valleys, with fairways and greens shaped to follow the natural contours of the land rather than impose upon them. The result is a layout that feels entirely at home in its environment — and one that rewards thoughtful play rather than power.
Belas holds a remarkable distinction: in 1998 it became the first golf course in Europe to receive ISO certification for environmental management, and later the first in the Iberian Peninsula to earn GEO — Golf Environment Organisation — certification. Biodiversity is a genuine feature here, not just a marketing claim. Wild rabbits, partridges and native birds are regularly spotted during a round, and narrow, tree-lined fairways create the feeling of playing through a living forest rather than a sculpted resort.

Royal Óbidos occupies one of the most striking pieces of golfing land on the Portuguese Silver Coast, situated above the medieval town of Óbidos and the natural lagoon of the same name, with Atlantic Ocean views from much of the course. What makes it particularly special is its authorship: it is one of the final designs by the late Severiano Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011 before the course opened — meaning he never played a single hole on it.
Opened in January 2012, the course is both a tribute to Seve’s design legacy and a genuine test of championship golf. Six of the back nine holes meander through an intricate system of interconnected lakes and cascading streams, while the front nine delivers spectacular views over the lagoon. The signature 5th hole — a 520-metre par 5 with an approach into a green surrounded on three sides by water — is one of the most memorable holes on Portugal’s Silver Coast.
Royal Óbidos has hosted the Portugal Open on the European Challenge Tour, cementing its status as a venue built for competitive golf. It is ranked among the top 100 courses in continental Europe by Golf World magazine.

Designed by American architect Cabell B. Robinson and opened on 14 June 1997, Praia d’el Rey is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in Europe. The layout is a rare and successful marriage of two distinct golfing environments: holes cut through fragrant pine forests on the inland side are counterbalanced by a dramatic back nine that breaks out onto the Atlantic dunes, delivering sea views, coastal breezes and genuine links-style challenges in equal measure.
Robinson reportedly stood on the site before construction and said: “This is the kind of landscape we architects try to create, but at Praia d’el Rey it’s all here, naturally. Now it’s my responsibility to protect it.” He did exactly that. The course is consistently rated among continental Europe’s top 20 layouts by Golf World magazine and remains one of Portugal’s most sought-after tee times for visiting golfers.
Deep bunkers, sloping greens and natural sand border areas create a compelling challenge from the first hole to the last. The resort also features the five-star Praia d’el Rey Marriott Hotel, and shares facilities with sister course West
Cliffs — located a ten-minute drive along the coast.

Designed by European Golf Design and opened in 2003, the course takes deliberate inspiration from the great Scottish and Irish links traditions — but transplants them into a landscape of olive groves, fruit trees and aromatic Mediterranean vegetation. The result is a course that is wide, flowing and strategic, yet entirely its own.
Morgado is one of the longest par 73 courses in the Algarve, featuring five par 5s, wide generous fairways and an average green size of 800 square metres — some of the largest putting surfaces in Portugal. Deep, Scottish- inspired bunkers demand accuracy off the tee, while the generous green targets encourage bold approach play. The architects described the design philosophy simply: “From a design viewpoint the course looks very tough, but it plays fair.”
The resort also hosts the Morgado do Reguengo Golf Academy, considered one of the finest golf teaching facilities in Portugal, and sister course Álamos Golf is a short walk away. The Monchique mountain range provides a striking backdrop to the round throughout.
